New in: April 2015

Got some sunglasses from Primark as I really liked them, even though I always forget to wear them haha I have a couple and I can't seem to remember to use them so I will keep these in my bag for when I go out and it's (hopefully) sunny. 

Then on a trip to Southend that was cut short by a mysterious stomach ache I found this shower gel by Ted Baker in the clearance section in one of the High Street's Boots for less than £2. 

And last but not least, last week I got a Revlon mousse foundation and lipstick from the clearance section in my local Boots for just £2 each, and I also got another Sanctuary Matte Hydra Lotion moisturiser and a Smoothing Silk Polish scrub from Savers for £3 each. 

I had a £5 off voucher when you spent £20 in H&M and couldn't let it go to waste haha so I got a black blazer to wear instead of coats and jackets when it gets a little bit warmer.
Edit: Last but not least, a white jumper from H&M for just £7, and my dear dot got me the new Bourjois Silk Edition Powder, Revlon Quick Dry Top Coat and Maybelline Master Precise Eyeliner.

Carl Barat and The Jackals at Scala

A couple of weeks back we went to London to see Carl Barat and the Jackals play at the Scala as part of the promotional tour for their first album Let It Reign.

They played songs from the album as well as some songs from his Dirty Pretty Things album and even a couple of Libertines ones, including my all time favourite Death on the Stairs.

The next night we went to see Palma Violets at the Chinnerys in Southend but I didn't get any pictures at the start and then I couldn't take any as people started standing up on the barrier and blocking everything, so here's one from dot's instagram:

Not For Me: Palmer's Tinted Lip Balm

Being a lip balm fan I decided to get this on our last visit to Mexico as I was very interested in trying it. 

The Palmer's Tinted Lip Balm claims to be soothing and provide long lasting moisture, as well as protecting from the sun with its SPF 15 and leaving a subtle cherry tint on the lips. 

As it's quite affordable and provides so many benefits I just had to get it. Upon first application lips feel softened and look smooth, all with a tinted finish and delicious chocolate & cherry scent. 

It was all good until a few minutes later when my lips started stinging, and it was not a nice minty tingling like it happens intentionally with some products. Obviously I had to wipe it off as the sensation was not nice at all. 

Unfortunately this product doesn't agree with my skin, which is a shame as it sounded very promising.

Clearly Youthful Serum + Moisturiser

Having oily skin can be a bit of a nightmare, especially if it means more spots and a shiny face (not nice). 

When I heard about Superdrug's Clearly Youthful range, I was quite interested as not being a teenager anymore means my skin's needs have changed, even though it's still oily and prone to spots. 

Seeing the range on offer, I decided to take advantage of it and picked up the SPF 15 Skin Balancing Moisturiser and the Hydrating Day Serum. 

The moisturiser claims to be lightweight, nourishing and hydrating. It contains salicylic acid, anti-shine cimicifuga and an anti-aging complex consisting of polyglycan and phytoprotein, soothing allantoin and moisturising sugar beet extract. Also mentions to provide a younger looking complexion, refine pores, control excess sebum and protect against further breakouts. 

The serum is an anti blemish and youth boosting solution containing the maximum permitted amount of salicylic acid, cimicifuga, lactic acid, phytoprotein, polyglycan and hyaluronic acid. It features a pump to dispense the product more easily and claims to do the same as the cream.

One of the main reasons I got these products was that they mention to be mattifying, which is something I definitely need. I started using the serum first and have noticed that it is indeed mattifying albeit not the most moisturising product out there. Recently started using the serum and the moisturiser combined and let me tell you that I was amazed by how less oily my skin looked after a good 8 hours.

Definitely give these two products a try if you suffer from extremely oily skin and don't want to spend a fortune on products to treat it, but do keep in mind that it's practically impossible to apply any foundation or concealer on top of the moisturiser as rubbing it in too much makes it peel off.

Platform Heels for Spring & Summer

With spring in full swing and the last couple of days looking surprisingly warm and sunny, it almost makes it feel like summer already. As the temperature changes, so should what you are wearing to make it weather appropriate. And to complete the look, of course a gorgeous pair of shoes.

The pair of platform heels on the left have a really fresh and spring-like feel to them thanks to the simplicity of the design and the use of white colour as a base. The playful polka dot pattern extends throughout the whole of the shoe with the exception of the heel, which is left white. It has a concealed platform that makes walking in these shoes more comfortable and the monochrome design will easily go with any everyday outfit. 

The platform shoes on the right have a lovely lace overlay fabric with a shimmery finish that glistens with the light, giving a gorgeous touch to your look. The 70s Are Back!

As you might have noticed, fashion always come back around and this time it’s the 70s turn to steal the spotlight. Many designers showcased their 70s inspired designs down the runway: Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Cavalli are a few of the fashion houses that featured classic 70s details including pussybow blouses and dresses with gorgeous patterns; suede accessories, skirts and bottoms; platform boots, wide brimmed hats and of course bell bottoms. 

Even though haute couture might not be for everyone’s taste or budget, the High Street always takes inspiration from Fashion Week every season, meaning you can still get that chic 70s look without spending a fortune.

Where to start? My First DSLR Camera

Too exciting to wait and put it in a New In post, so I just had to write about it: with the earnings from my blog I was able to buy a new DSLR camera!

Had been thinking about getting one for ages, doing a bit of research and hoping a good offer would come up on any of the websites I'd been stalking (currys, argos, tesco & jessops). Tesco was offering a free bag + memory card but doesn't accept paypal, so when browsing again on Maundy Thursday I discovered that Jessops were giving away a camera bag, UV filter, lens cleaning kit and screen protectors with the purchase of the Nikon D3200 + Kit Lens, plus it has free delivery on orders over £50 and accepts paypal which is why I couldn't pass it up. 

I'm thankful for my previous camera which helped me learn the basics of how to use manual mode but I was ready for an upgrade and I think it is a great investment. The Nikon D3200 is easy to use, takes amazing quality pictures with the kit lens and has better specifications than its Canon contender  (the 1200D model) such as bigger sensor, higher resolution photographs, more auto-focus points, self cleaning sensor, higher resolution screen, larger viewfinder, and higher maximum ISO with a better performance. 

The 3rd picture is the first one I took with my new camera as a test shot and I must say I was very impressed and pleased with it. Absolutely love my new camera and can't wait to take more pictures and share them with you!

Reading | Black Ice + Giveaway

Black Ice tells the story of Britt Pfeiffer, who is a girl that usually relies on the men in her life to come and rescue her whenever she is in trouble. On a holiday break, she convinces her best friend Korbie to come with her on a trekking trip in order to impress her ex-boyfriend. 

As they are on their way to Korbie's family cabin in the mountains, a snow storm leaves them stranded and they have to look for somewhere to stay until the storm has passed. When they find a cabin with 2 young men inside, they think they're in luck but are they really? One of the guys wasn't keen on letting them in the cabin and later we find out that they are actually stranded as well and looking for a way out of the mountains, where they are hiding for some reason they won't tell. There have been a few murders in the area recently, could they be the killers?

The girls realise this is serious and in order to stay alive Britt must guide them off the snowy and cold mountains. As tension builds, Britt has to find a way to escape while she hopes her ex-boyfriend will come in her rescue when he finds out they didn't make it to Korbie's cabin. 

A really entertaining and mysterious novel with many unexpected plot twists, Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick* makes a great holiday read. It's a book that I enjoyed reading but it did leave me with a couple of questions (spoilers in the next couple of lines) such as why Lauren and Jude had different last names, what happened to Bear, and why did Britt wait so long to contact Jude if she couldn't get over him?

Affordable Prom Dresses

With spring finally here, the days are getting brighter and warmer. And if you're a student this also means that prom is only a couple of months away and it's time to start looking into prom dress options.

One thing's for sure: pastels are always in for spring and this pink dress on the left is a perfect option to wear to prom. New in: March 2015

I was looking for new skinny jeans and reading about the Uniqlo leggings trousers, I decided to give them a try when we went to Westfield a couple of weeks back. They're super comfortable and feel like a lightweight pair of jeans (similar to Topshop's Leigh jeans) they fit really well and are very affordable (under £15) the front pockets and button are fake so you do have to pull them up like you would leggings. 

Then in H&M I found a lovely faux fur cushion cover for £7, as well as a cashmere jumper that I got for free! The jumper was £25 down from £50, I had a £20 gift card plus a £5 off voucher and I just had to get it as I love the dusty pink colour and texture of it. 

Having £10 that were about to expire on my Debenham's beauty card, I had to spend them and I found this Burt's Bees best of tin and since it was reduced I only paid about £3 for the whole thing. 

In TKMaxx found this lovely pencil set by Orla Kiely reduced to £5 (was £10) and as a fan of all things stationery from a young age I couldn't pass this up, so they came home with me haha.

And in Savers (love that place) I found the Matte Perfecting Hydra Lotion from Sanctuary Spa for just £3 (normally £13.50).

Got the Avon Skin so Soft creamy body wash to try and a free Ren Keep Young & Beautiful serum sample and another sample, this one of Balance Me Pure Skin Face Wash, which came free with Glamour Magazine last month, I'd tried this face wash before and quite liked it so picked it up again.

007 For Women Eau De Parfum

Recently I was lucky enough to receive the new 007 For Women Eau De Parfum to try and review. 

The fragrance is inspired by "iconic women found in Bond's seductive and daring world" and it's meant to be a dangerously seductive fragrance with its unique mix of ingredients that blend femininity with mystery which results in a modern interpretation of an oriental fragrance. 

The top notes of 007 For Women comprise black pepper and rose milk, heart notes are blackberry and white floral jasmine and base notes are vanilla, white musk and cedar wood. The bottle is meant to resemble a woman's décolletage and at the same time the opening sequence of Bond's films with the black and white transitions. 

I think this is a really nice fragrance, I especially like it upon first spray and the first few minutes of wear as I can perceive a light fruity smell coming from the blackberry notes. I'm not the biggest fan of the woody & musky base notes but that's just personal preference. I find that 007 For Women is a light and feminine fragrance that can be worn day and night but unfortunately isn't very long lasting on me.

I have 2 weeks off for Easter Holidays! One of the benefits of working in a school. One of the girls today said to me "daddy is at work" and I said "I'm at work" to which she laughed and replied "you're not at work, you're at pre-school!". Thought that was funny haha. 

On a sad note I got a bit of a cold and funny knee, just in time for holidays, great ;(

Beating Lower Back Pain

An estimated 80% of UK adults will experience back pain within their lifetime[i] and the affliction has widespread social repercussions, including social isolation, withdrawal and damaged relationships[ii].

Most people’s long term lower back pain is described as ‘non specific’, this occurs when the pain doesn’t arise from any particular medical condition, for example a known disease, fracture, malignancy or slipped disc etc, but from the structures of the back. It is usually triggered by how we use and look after our backs, and many common lifestyle practices can exacerbate the problem.

Chiropractor Dr Steven Geanopulos gives advice on how to help alleviate this form of long term back pain:

Keep Moving

Lack of regular movement can contribute to issues with the spine and degeneration of spinal joints, so physical activity in the form of regular exercise is essential to care for the back. Controlled movement of the spine can also help those suffering from long term non specific lower back pain; a recent study suggests that a device called Kyrobak (www.kyrobak.co.uk) -which delivers a unique, soothing combination of Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) and Oscillation Therapy (OT) - significantly reduced pain scores in long term non specific lower back pain sufferers after just 10 minutes of use 1-3 times per day for 3 weeks.

De-stress

Prolonged stress can lead to exacerbations of pain due to the release of the hormone cortisol and increases in muscle tension. Mental stresses are often best dealt with by addressing state of mind, and meditation – or simply periods of quiet reflection- can help with this. Engaging in activities such as yoga and Pilates which have been shown to help with stress and anxiety are also positive steps to take.  

Watch your weight

Ongoing poor nutritional choices and carrying excess weight can damage health long term, and contribute to exacerbations of inflammation and lower back pain. Maintaining a healthy weight is therefore key. Opting for a  nutritious, well balanced diet and eating  small, healthy meals and snacks on a regular basis can mean you are less likely to let extreme hunger dictate what you eat, helping to avoid the high calorie, high sugar options which lead to weight gain.

Bedside Beauty Essentials

Being a skincare fan, my routine can be a bit longer than others' and it even extends beyond the bathroom area. Next to my bed I like to keep a little container with a hand cream, lip balm and eye cream to apply just before going to bed. 

The winter saw me using these 3 products as part of my night time beauty routine:

Neal's Yard Geranium and Orange Hand Cream: This hand cream came as a freebie with a magazine some months ago. It has a rich consistency that moisturises well and absorbs faster than the Bee Lovely version, which I liked. Something I didn't really love was the scent, which is very heavy geranium based. In the end the scent grew into me but I don't think I would actually purchase it. 

Botanics 80% Organic Hydrating Eye Cream: This eye cream has a super light texture and is quite hydrating but can't really comment on its ability to reduce fine lines. It's ok if you're looking for an organic eye cream but I don't think I'll be coming back to this product either. 

Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Moisturising Stick: I was actually very excited to try this as I'm a big fan of lip balms and this was my first Nuxe product. I wasn't disappointed, even though at first it looks very waxy, it melts just enough against the warmth of your lips and moisturises beautifully, as well as smelling gorgeous. Dry skin is diminished if not completely gone from the first couple of uses. Glad I bought a 2 pack. Would definitely buy again.

I was in every day at work this week and it was intense. I was asked to make snack for the first time yesterday afternoon and then again today morning and afternoon. Good news though: I'll have 2 weeks off for Easter!

L'oreal Studio Silk & Gloss Hot Straight Spray and Cream

I always feel the need to condition and protect my hair and have all types of products for that: heat protecting, serums, oils, styling creams, etc. Quite a while ago (I believe they've changed the packaging now) I purchased the L'oreal Studio Silk & Gloss Hot Straight Spray and Cream on offer, and even though I don't apply heat all the time to my hair, I like to have protecting products just in case I do. 

L'oreal Studio Silk & Gloss Hot Straight Spray and Cream are meant to leave your hair with a glossy shine and silky touch, protecting your hair against heated tools and leaving it smooth and frizz fee for 24 and 48 hours respectively.

Normally I use the cream when blow drying my hair and the spray when I use a flat iron. Both products are slightly scented, very lightweight and easy to work with. I must say that my hair does feel really soft and looks very shiny after using them along styling tools.

New In: February 2015

Suede boots from Topshop that I got for just £10 (seen them before at my local Topshop but they didn't have my size, but a tiny 3 UK, so when I found them in Lakeside I had to get them). Also got some suede protecting spray, a new eye cream from the L'oreal Skin Perfection range and a couple of free bits from L'Occitane. 

Some dark chocolate from Aldi, which is actually really good, a set of notebooks and a candy jar from the pound shop. 

And last but not least, mini fine liners from the pound shop, Palmer's eye cream, Skin, Hair & Nail vitamins and one of the new Bourjois lip crayons in Proudly Naked.

Evening Dresses at IHomecoming

Homecoming is such an important celebration on many student's lives, which is why you want to look your best on this memorable occasion. Above are a couple of my favourites, as you can see they are beautiful and elegant evening gowns that will make you stand out wherever you go. As spring is finally here, I would go for any of these pastel dresses. Also, since the weather is not quite as warm yet, a longer length will keep you cosy if it decides to start getting cold later during the evening. 

The dress on the left is a bit of a hybrid between a Grecian style as well as a wrap dress. Featuring a v shaped neckline that overlaps slightly on one side, it looks very flattering as it goes in at the waist which is highlighted by a charming beaded sash. The same embellishment can be seen  as an extra detail on the shoulder, which adds a bit of sparkle and spares you the need to add much more jewellery. This dress is not very fitted so it conceals any areas that you don't want to show, as it skims over the body with slight texture on the lovely pink fabric and a flowy skirt. 

The right dress comes in a pale peach shade that would look amazing against darker skin tones. The bodice has a sweetheart neckline and a ruched texture to add contrast against the simple but beautiful floor length skirt. It doesn't have a sash or any sparkly elements as the pink dress but it does feature a string of beautiful ruffled flowers along one shoulder for added femininity.
